What’s it like to work at CCP?
Our firm views the student program as the primary development ground for our future lawyer colleagues. As a result, during their time at CCP our student colleagues will deepen their knowledge in the substantive areas of law that we practice in, while at the same time they will develop an awareness of the practical, business aspects of a legal practice. Students will gain this knowledge and experience through a variety of avenues. For starters, they will research a variety of topics in the field. Over time, students will also begin to use their own research in assisting with the drafting of pleadings and opinions of law, and in writing papers and newsletter articles.
As essential as research is, however, CCP also strives to get students out of the library. Students will be asked to accompany and assist lawyers in meetings and hearings, they will be involved in trial and hearing preparation, and they will be asked to attend Assignment Court and make other appearances before courts and tribunals. While these experiences allow our student colleagues to “learn while doing,” our lawyers also use these situations to introduce students to the firm’s clients, other lawyers and court and tribunal officials.
CCP takes its continuing legal education (“CLE”) and mentoring activities very seriously. This is because in order to provide top notch service to our clients, our lawyers must always continue learning. Therefore, the firm regularly schedules in-house CLE programs, conducted by outside counsel and speakers and the firm’s lawyers themselves. In addition, CCP lawyers believe in providing feedback to students and being available for questions.
Students are equipped with all the tools that they will require in their work. Each student’s computer is linked to the firm’s internal network, and has access to the principal on-line and web-based legal databases and resources that a student will need at CCP. Our firm also has a comprehensive management labour and employment law library on-site, and an extensive precedent collection. Finally, for those research assignments that take students outside the bounds of labour and employment law resources, students have access to the Peel Law Library, an extensive collection which is located just across the street from CCP’s offices.
